Card readers with Stripe Terminal

Take card payments at the desk on a Stripe Terminal reader driven from the till, rehearse with a simulated reader in test mode, and know what to do when a card is declined.

The till can drive a Stripe Terminal card reader, so a card payment at the desk lands in the same Stripe account as your web sales and the two reconcile in one place. You need Box Office's Stripe payments set up already; see Installing Box Office.

Registering a reader

Readers are registered in your Stripe dashboard, under Terminal, not in WordPress. Once a reader is registered and online it appears in the till's list. If the list is empty, register one in Stripe or press Refresh readers.

Taking a payment

At step 2 of a sale choose Card reader, pick the reader, and press Take payment on the card reader. The reader asks the customer to tap or insert; the till waits and there is nothing to do until it answers. When the card is accepted the sale completes by itself.

Cancel this payment stops a payment that has not gone through. The seats stay held, so you can take payment another way.

If the card is declined

The till tells you the card was not accepted. The seats are still held: try another card, or take cash instead.

Rehearsing in test mode

While your Stripe keys are test keys, the till can create a simulated reader and simulate a tap, so you can run through a whole sale without a reader on the desk. Simulated readers only exist in Stripe test mode; they disappear when you switch to live keys.

Other card machines

Any card machine works with the till. Choose Card (terminal) as the payment method, take the payment on the machine as usual, and type the reference from its receipt into the order. The difference from a Stripe Terminal reader is only that the till cannot see the outcome for itself.
